“When I’m old and dying, I plan to look back on my life and say, ‘Wow, that was an adventure,’ not, ‘Wow, I sure felt safe.'” ~Tom Preston-Werner
I don’t know about you, but I believe fear is the Grand Poobah of attributes to get the hell over! Fear shatters dreams. On the contrary, when we feel fear and do something anyway…miracles happen! I want you to have the life you deserve. And busting through fear is the gateway to a beautiful life.
Are you are looking for answers that will help you define what’s missing in your life? And how to change that? Maybe you haven’t been able to pinpoint WHAT exactly you are looking for, but here are some signs that clarity is a big need for you right now.
Signs of a Seeker include:
An overwhelming desire for something more, but you can’t quite put it into words
Stress, anxiety and unease from feeling you’re wasting time.
Aggravation that you can’t figure out exactly what you want or how to do it.
The feeling that no one understands you or supports you or your ideas.
Overeating, not sleeping, digestive issues over rolling this unease around incessantly
Having a glass of wine, (or a bottle!) at night to just freakin’ disappear because you’re spinning your wheels, feeling like you’re going nowhere.
I so get it. I’m very familiar with these feelings.
For years, I struggled with this underlying feeling that I was supposed to be doing something big, but I didn’t know what that was. It drove me mad. I read a lot and traveled a lot thinking that if I got out of my environment then magically something would happen and the big REVEAL would show itself. How many outlines and brain dumps did I do? PLENTY! I’ve got a storage bin full of notebooks with thoughts, stories, diaries and ideas for businesses written over several decades.
Change and growth is a journey. Usually big things don’t happen over night because we don’t have the courage to take the ball and run with it.
How many times did I swear that this time I would do everything in a new way to get a better result? A few days later “the new way” was forgotten and I was back to my usual habits. An Overnight Overhaul isn’t sustainable. No matter who you are!
I realized that the reason I never followed through was that I didn’t have a strong enough reason WHY I wanted to make these changes. I had no destination. What was the end goal? What work would be most meaningful and rewarding for me? What adventurers would enhance my life? What was it I truly wanted my life to look like?
All of these answers lie within. The only way to hear them is to slow down, stop feeling overwhelmed, and listen, truly listen to your heart. Trust yourself and empower yourself by knowing who you are.
Have you had those moments where you think you’re onto something big? A brilliant idea you’ve come up with and then hours or days later you feel that was dumb? You wonder what you were thinking?
Well maybe it wasn’t the greatest idea, but I know from experience that I’ve felt that way dozens of times and some of those ideas were along the life I’m living now. And I wish I’d started sooner! So trust your ideas and begin to live on purpose.
On Saturday I met two amazing people while traveling home from a 4 day conference. One was my Uber driver Daniel. Daniel was dressed impeccably, had a spotless car, and even complimentary water and snacks for his passengers. He said he was working on Saturday morning for 4 hours because he knew that’s what he needed to do to reach his financial goal for the week.
Do you know your numbers to a tee? Do you know exactly what you need to do to accomplish your goals? Do you even HAVE concrete goals like Daniel?
When Daniel gave me his card I couldn’t believe it. Not only was it a beautifully designed card but he had branded himself! I don’t want to give away all his secrets but the gist of it was he was “building relationships not just transactions”. It was brilliant! I was so proud of him, and told him so. He got choked up, because he has been trying so hard and honestly didn’t realize how far he’d come. Wow! Sometimes we can’t see the brilliance in ourselves.
In the airport terminal I saw a woman with a beautiful smile so I stopped to chat with her. Her name was Mary. Mary is a shoe shiner at the Las Vegas airport. She’s from Kenya and is working to bring her children to the U.S. It turns out Mary is a CPA, but her credentials are inadequate for the U.S. so she needs to take further courses to get a job here. She said, “no problem. I’ll do the work”, all the while smiling and happy just to be here.
We had a lovely conversation. I watched as she asked people walking past her if they wanted a shoe shine. Most ignored her, some grunted, and some said YES. As a business owner, I know that asking for the sale is one of the pieces most of us find hard to do, but Mary faced rejection every few seconds. She just had to be patient to get the YES. All the while she kept her positive attitude. I was so impressed! A “NO” didn’t faze her in the least.
Are you ready to give your dreams a shot? Ready to step up like Daniel and Mary? All it takes is your willingness to stay the course.
